Advent is a season of waiting and expectation for Christmas – the birth of Christ, the Nativity of Our Lord. We prepare our homes and hearts for four weeks before Christmas.
How many Sundays are there in Advent?
Advent always starts 4 Sundays before Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is December 1st. The first Sunday of Advent is also the beginning of the new liturgical year. The second Sunday of Advent is December 8th. The third Sunday of Advent is December 15th. Called “Gaudete Sunday,” meaning rejoice, a pink candle on the Advent wreath represents this Sunday. The fourth Sunday of Advent is December 22nd.
Christmas officially starts on December 25th and is traditionally celebrated for twelve days, ending with Epiphany on January 6th. This period celebrates the birth of Jesus and is followed by Ordinary Time in many Christian traditions, depending on the specific liturgical calendar.
Enjoy the season of Hope and expectation.
